Holiday in Vizcaya tomorrow

- Charlie Lagasca -

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines – It’s a special non-working holiday in this landlocked province tomorrow in observance of its 172nd founding anniversary.

The holiday is based on a presidential decree issued by the late former President Marcos, declaring every May 24 a special non-working holiday in the province.

It was on May 24, 1839 when Luis Lardizabal, then the country’s Spanish governor-general, ordered the creation of Nueva Vizcaya province from the then undivided Cagayan, which was affirmed by a Spanish royal decree two years later.

Tomorrow’s festivities, also the culmination of the weeklong Grand Ammungan (Coming Together) Festival, will be highlighted by a grand parade expected to draw a crowd of some 20,000 spectators.

The parade will feature colorful floats and cultural street dancing, depicting the province’s diverse ethnic origins.
