P1-B hazard mapping project underway

-

ROSALES, Pangasinan ,Philippines  – President Aquino announced yesterday the government will embark on a P1-billion comprehensive mapping project this year to help determine hazard-prone areas and monitor projects nationwide.

Aquino said the comprehensive 3D mapping will be spearheaded by the Department of Science and Technology.

The President made the announcement during the inauguration of the P243-million, Japan-funded Agno River Flood Forecasting and Warning System here.

The President said the mapping project will help government authorities determine the areas that are prone to floods and other natural hazards.

“This will give us more time to assist our people who are affected by flooding,” he said.

Science and Technology Secretary Mario Montejo said, “Definitely, we will start this year.”

He said the two-year project will be very useful to all government agencies.

“It is the same as the Google Map. But this one is more accurate… it provides a view range of 200 millimeters or about eight inches,” Montejo told reporters.

Through the project, he said they will know where the flooded areas area during the rainy season as well as possible evacuation sites.

He said they will also determine the number of completed road and school projects in the country as well as irrigation canals and dams.

“This will help us determine the areas where we can build additional dams and how much water can be impounded,” he said. – Helen Flores, Eva Visperas
