Cemetery dike collapses; cadavers washed to sea

- Ben Serrano -

BUTUAN CITY, Philippines  – More than 200 cadavers were washed to the sea after an embankment of a cemetery in Surigao del Sur collapsed last Monday, reports reaching this capital said.

Tandag City Mayor Alexander Pimentel confirmed that more than 200 cadavers, some of them still inside coffins, were seen floating off Tago, Surigao del Sur as strong current and huge waves might have destroyed the concrete dike of the town’s public cemetery located near the shore.

Pimentel denied initial reports that the cadavers came from the Tandag City cemetery “because this is located in the hilly portion of the city.”

Tago is only a few kilometers away from Tandag City, the capital of Surigao del Sur.

The Department of Health has been tasked to look into reports that fishponds have been contaminated due to the incident.
