Family of 7 killed in Leyte mudslide

-

PALO, Leyte, Philippines  – A mudslide that struck silently at night has buried a family of seven after three days of heavy rains caused flooding in central Philippines.

Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez said the mud flowed silently during a power outage before dawn and neighbors only realized what happened at daybreak yesterday.

The seven members of the Jordan family were sleeping when the mudslide hit their home and five other houses.

Romualdez said six bodies had been retrieved and rescuers were searching for a high school student still missing.

Flooding has affected 90 percent of Tacloban’s 138 barangays.

Disaster officials said 1,360 people have left their homes due to floods and landslides in four central and southern provinces. – Miriam Garcia Desacada, Jaime Laude, Evelyn Macairan, AP
