Seaman gets 4 life terms for killing wife, 3 kids

- Charlie Lagasca -

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines – A marine engineer accused of killing his wife and three children nine years ago has been sentenced to four life jail terms or an equivalent of 160 years in jail.

Judge Rogelio Corpuz of the Bayombong Regional Trial Court Branch 27, meted the penalty on Danilo Afalla, 56, for the murder of his wife Aperacion, 40, and their children Chinee, 12; Mark Anthony, 9; and Mike Angelo, 5, on April 18, 2001.

The court dismissed Afalla’s defense that he was not aware of what happened to his family when he returned to his work in the United States on April 19, 2001 or a day after authorities found the decomposing bodies of his wife and three children in a shallow grave along the Magat River here.

Although there was no direct evidence or any eyewitness pointing to Afalla as the culprit, the court said all circumstances and other pieces of evidence pointed to him as the perpetrator.

With the help of the Interpol, Afalla was arrested by the Miami police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation on May 11, 2001 and repatriated to the country.
