Special polls in 3 provinces eyed on Nov. 6
MANILA, Philippines - The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is eyeing the conduct of special polls in Bulacan, Lanao del Sur and Basilan on Nov. 6 and no longer on Oct. 2, an official said yesterday.
Comelec Commissioner Rene Sarmiento said the schedule was again moved due to delays in the approval of the contract between Comelec and Smartmatic International Corp., provider of the precinct count optical scan (PCOS) machines to be used in the special elections.
“It was agreed upon (the other day) that we will do it on Nov. 6 but there is no resolution on that yet. We still have to come up with a resolution,” he said.
Sarmiento added that with Nov. 6, the Comelec would have enough time to prepare for the special polls, which involve a congressional seat in Bulacan, provincial board seats in Basilan and a number of municipal elective positions in Lanao del Sur.
The Comelec will use some 920 PCOS machines in the P133-million special polls, which will involve 590,500 registered voters.
