106 lawmen who violated gun ban face sanctions

MANILA, Philippines - At least 106 policemen, who were arrested for violating the nationwide gun ban imposed by the Commission on Elections (Comelec), will undergo training and might face dismissal from the service, suspension or demotion in rank.

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Jesus Verzosa said the 106 police officers, including a chief inspector, which is equivalent to major in the military rank, were among the more than 3,000 people arrested for violating the gun ban.

“The training was designed for them to give due respect of the present thrust of the PNP like the gun ban,” Verzosa said.

Aside from the 106 policemen, Verzosa said the violators included 63 military personnel and 300 government employees.

He said at least 10 policemen have been dismissed, while 15 others have been demoted.

He said the action taken against the policemen violators would depend on the circumstances of their arrest.

“Aside from administrative charges, (these) policemen will also face criminal charges for violating the gun ban,” he said.

The Comelec imposed the nationwide gun ban in connection with the May 10 national and local elections.
