3 dead in Rizal shootout
MANILA, Philippines - A policeman, a municipal employee and a civilian were killed in a shootout among supporters of rival politicians in Rodriguez, Rizal yesterday.
Police said SPO2 Danny Zuñiga and municipal employee Ricardo Amata died on the spot, while Bhong Meldo was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Amata was allied with acting Rodriguez Mayor Jonas Cruz, while Meldo was a supporter of the town’s suspended mayor, Pedro Cuerpo, police said.
Amata was alleged to have choked Cuerpo at the height of a confrontation at the town hall when the latter’s suspension was being served.
Amata was at the San Jose public market when Meldo shot him from behind yesterday morning. Zuñiga, who was in the area, tried to accost Meldo and a shootout occurred. – Non Alquitran
