Quezon mayor survives slay try
LUCENA CITY, Philippines – The last-term mayor of Tiaong town in Quezon survived an attempt on his life at the parking lot of a church yesterday morning, police said.
Superintendent Elmo Francis Sarona, Quezon police director, said Mayor Raul Umali and his wife were about to board their vehicle at the parking lot of St. John the Baptist Parish Church when a lone gunman shot the local executive at around 10:15 a.m.
Luckily, Umali was not hit when his bodyguards managed to shove him down on the ground and protected him with their bodies.
Umali’s aides then pursued the gunman who boarded a car and escaped.
Police have yet to establish the motive behind the slay attempt on Umali, whose son is running for Tiaong mayor this time.
