Sayyaf sends proof of life for kidnapped trader

ZAMBOANGA CITY , Philippines  – Abu Sayyaf rebels holding a young businessman captive in Basilan for more than three months have sent “proof of life” and demanded a huge ransom for his release, authorities said.

The victim, Donald John Capili, 19, a scion of a political clan in Liloy town in Zamboanga del Norte, was confirmed to be in the custody of the Abu Sayyaf in Basilan, said Vice Gov. Al-Rasheed Sakalahul, chairman of the Crisis Management Committee.

Capili was seized last Aug. 28 in Liloy town.

Sakalahul said the proof of life included Capili’s picture and five-page letter placed in an envelope that was sent to his office in Isabela City, Basilan.

Sakalahul did not specify the ransom demand but said it was a huge amount.

“The victim, in his letter, also appealed to his family to do something for his release before Christmas,” Sakalahul said.

He said they are now validating if Capili’s letter and picture are authentic.

Sakalahul said the provincial government under Gov. Jum Akbar has ordered no negotiations with the kidnappers and strict adherence to the government’s no-ransom policy.

Reports said Capili has been brought together with three other kidnap victims, including two Chinese nationals, who were seized in Maluso, Basilan last Nov. 10.

Superintendent Abubakar Tulawie, acting Basilan police director, said three Abu Sayyaf groups have joined forces to guard Capili and fellow kidnap victims Bo Shung Tan alias Michael Tan, Zi Shun Lu alias Oscar Lu, and Mark Singson.
