153 rebels surrender in Mindanao
COTABATO CITY , Philippines – Tired of fighting the government, 153 communist rebels in Southern Mindanao surrendered and pledged allegiance to the Philippine flag from January to early July, the military said.
Capt. Rosa Ma. Christina Manuel, public affairs officer of the 10th Infantry Division, said the rebels yielded 32 assorted firearms, enabling them to avail of allowable cash assistance.
“These rebels availed of the government’s reconciliation program, particularly the Social Integration Program, which can help them start life all over again,” Manuel said in an e-mailed statement.
The 153 New People’s Army guerillas reportedly surrendered through the joint efforts of local officials and the commander of the 10th ID, Major Gen. Reynaldu Mapagu. – John Unson
