2 soldiers, village exec killed

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Two soldiers and a barangay leader were killed in an ambush by suspected communist rebels in Monkayo, Compostela Valley Wednesday morning.

The victims were identified as Sgt. Wendel Salva and Cpl. Pancraso Catubig Jr., both members of the Army’s 1003rd Infantry Brigade, and Juan Bacharo, a purok leader in Monkayo town.

Maj. Gen. Reynaldo Mapagu, Army 10th Infantry Division chief, said the victims had just come from the house of a certain barangay captain Basarte when they were waylaid. – Edith Regalado, Roel Pareño
