Enrile: I'm not running for Cagayan governor

- Charlie Lagasca -

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines – Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile belied reports that he is running for governor of Cagayan, his home-province, saying he is leaving local politics to his fellow Cagayanos.

“Definitely, I am not running for governor of Cagayan nor will my son (former congressman Jack Enrile). We will just be supporting the present (local leadership),” said Enrile, who hails from Gonzaga town.

Enrile, one of the region’s remaining political patriarchs, was in this province Saturday as guest of honor and speaker in the inauguration of a 7.3-hectare shrine of Dr. Jose Rizal.

Enrile’s denial came amid rumors that he is joining the gubernatorial race next year against incumbent Gov. Alvaro Antonio, his political protégé, former governor Edgar Lara, and last-term third district Rep. Manuel Mamba.

“I am happy with my present position (as Senate President) although I did not seek it. It was just given to me on a silver platter,” he said.

Enrile also nixed any plan to seek a higher position, either for president or vice president, saying he would just leave the race to other politicians, including the younger ones.

However, Enrile, who hinted a Senate re-election bid, said he supports former President Estrada’s reclaiming the presidency next year.
