- Miriam Garcia Desacada -

CAMP RUPERTO KANGLEON, Palo, Leyte, Philippines – The police chief of Balangiga, Eastern Samar sustained several knife wounds when he was attacked while responding to a stabbing incident yesterday.

Chief Superintendent Mario San Diego, Eastern Visayas police director, said Senior Inspector Cayetano Gannaban, together with his men, rushed to Barangay San Miguel where suspect Conrad Abing allegedly stabbed dead a certain Jose Valdenibro.

But instead of dropping his hunting knife, Abing tried to grab Gannaban’s service firearm and then stabbed him three times.

This forced Gannaban to fire at Abing, hitting him in the legs. However, stray bullets hit residents Ricky Fabilla, 25, and Manuel Perez, 82.

San Diego said Gannaban is now in stable condition, but has to face investigation if he violated the rules of engagement.
