3 Compostela miners killed in landslide
DAVAO CITY – Three small-scale miners, including a father and son, were killed in a landslide that struck a gold-rush site in Compostela Valley the other day, police said.
Senior Superintendent Ronald de la Rosa, provincial police director, said the victims – Jamil Gonzales, 20, his father Johnny, and another gold panner, a certain Julius Guevarra – were hit by falling rocks from the upper portion of a creek in Purok 25, Barangay Ngan in Compostela town.
De la Rosa said the victims were trying to divert the flow of the water in the creek to their area so they could flash the gold ore they had gathered when they met their deaths.
Elements of the 1102nd Provincial Police Mobile Group were dispatched to retrieve the bodies of the three victims.
Landslides have been commonplace in Compostela Valley. Last September, more than 20 people were killed and several others were injured in a landslide that hit Barangay Masara in Pantukan town.
Last month, landslides also struck two barangays in the mining area on Mt. Diwalwal, killing six people.
