Reward vs kidnap-slay suspect raised to P.5 M

- Bebot Sison Jr., Cecille Suerte Felipe -

Anti-crime advocates in Cavite and friends of a retired pilot and his driver who were kidnapped and slain last June have offered an additional P200,000 for the arrest of the prime suspect, bringing the total reward to P500,000.

Senior Superintendent Leonardo Espina, chief of Police Anti-Crime and Emergency Response (PACER), expressed hope that the reward “will encourage citizens to provide information” for the early arrest of Mariano “Spider” de Leon.

“We are presenting in court an airtight case that establishes the participation of the accused in this criminal conspiracy,” he said.

De Leon, together with seven others, is facing charges of kidnapping for ransom and double homicide before the Pasay City regional trial court for the abduction and killing of retired pilot Demosthenes Cañete and his driver, Allan Garay.

De Leon and another co-accused, PO1 Reniel Abogado, alias Dondon, remain at large and are now the subject of PACER’s nationwide manhunt. A P150,000 reward is offered for Abogado’s arrest.

Judge Pedro Gutierrez of Pasay City RTC Branch 119 issued warrants of arrest for De Leon and Abogado last month.

Six other accused are detained without bail, namely former Dasmariñas, Cavite vice mayor Victor Carungcong, spouses Chief Inspector Exequiel Cautiver and Chief Inspector Penelope Cautiver, PO1 Rick Selga, Alejandrito Entolizo Jr., and Gary Pateo.

Last June 27, Cañete and his driver failed to return home after visiting the retired pilot’s business establishment at the Land Transportation Office compound in Sabang, Dasmariñas town.

Later that day, Cañete’s wife received a call from a man demanding P20 million for the release of her husband and Garay.

After a series of negotiations, the kidnappers agreed to lower the ransom to P973,000 and a payoff was arranged on July 4 in Malibay, Pasay City.

Speaking on behalf of her family, lawyer Joann Cañete Chan, daughter of the retired pilot, thanked police and prosecutors for their swift action.

“We look forward to the day when all those who conspired in this crime will be locked behind bars for good,” Chan said.
