‘No-Aircon Day’ imposed in NV town

- Charlie Lagasca -

SOLANO, Nueva Vizcaya – This landlocked province’s premier town is now leading the way in energy conservation measures.

Starting last Friday, the municipal government has implemented a “No-Aircon Day” in all of its offices every Friday.

In his directive, Mayor Philip Dacayo also ordered all municipal government offices not to turn on their air-conditioning units earlier than 8 a.m.

He said the rising cost of electricity as well as fuel and other basic commodities prompted these moves.

The various heads of offices, according to Dacayo, agreed to these measures after the town hall’s electricity bills ballooned from some P86,000 last January to more than P180,000 in May.

Earlier, the municipal government also ordered employees to cut down on their gasoline expenses and make fuel requests for their service vehicles “only when the need arises.”

Various sectors welcomed the municipal government’s energy-saving measures.

“We consider this to be an important cost-saving measure of the municipal government which we believe will result in savings for our town,” said councilor Regie Valino-Valdez.

“This is a welcome development for our town as the savings will accrue to added services for the community,” said senior labor leader Norma Navoa.

“It’s nice to hear that the municipal government has thought of measures to cut its expenditures like this (No-Aircon Day),” said public school teacher Noli Domincel.
