Army seizes firearms in Quezon clashes
The Philippine Army announced yesterday the recovery of high-powered firearms in a series of encounters with the New People’s Army in Quezon province Monday.
Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner Jr., Army spokesman said 1st Special Forces troops led by Lt. Col. Ramiro Rey recovered the NPA firearms following a gunbattle at Barangay Silangang Maligaya, Agdangan at high noon Monday.
Two NPA insurgents and one soldier were wounded in the fighting that resulted to the initial recovery of one M16 rifle, a 9mm pistol, two hand grenades, two improvised landmines and two sacks containing documents of high intelligence value.
During mopping up operations in the same area, the troops found five more M16 assault rifles, an Uzi machine pistol and a shotgun, Brawner said.
The recovery of the high-powered NPA firearms prompted Army Special Forces commander, Brig. Gen. Arturo Ortiz to order his men to further conduct a thorough search in the area which is believed being used by the insurgents as their arms transshipment and distribution point.
