Ampatuan definitely seeking 2nd term

- John Unson -

COTABATO CITY – Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Gov. Datu Zaldy Ampatuan is definitely seeking reelection, the regional secretariat of the administration’s Lakas-Christian, Muslim Democrats party said yesterday.

Also seeking reelection as running mate of Ampatuan, regional chairman of Lakas-CMD, is Vice Gov. Ansarudin Adiong, younger brother of Lanao del Sur Gov. Mamintal Adiong Jr.

Engineer Norie Unas, chief of the Lakas-CMD regional secretariat, said Ampatuan, 40, will file his certificate of candidacy any day from May 13 to 20, which is the schedule for the filing of candidacy for regional elective positions set by the Commission on Elections.

Unas said Ampatuan’s accomplishments, both politically and administratively, are what prodded local officials to ask the governor to seek reelection in the Aug. 11 elections.

Ranking officials of the ARMM’s education department, which has more than 15,000 teachers, said among those who have called on Ampatuan, son of Maguindanao Gov. Datu Andal Ampatuan, to run for a second term, are faculty members of public schools.

“Now is the time for us to reciprocate by voting for him for having ironed out the administrative and fiscal problems that hounded our department during the previous administrations. Our salaries are now paid regularly and we are once again enjoying the benefits of remitting our monthly premiums to the Government Service Insurance System,” a district supervisor in Lanao del Sur said.

Mayor Roderick Furigay of Lamitan City, a component area of the ARMM, said a “red carpet reception” awaits Ampatuan when he files his certificate of candidacy in Zamboanga City where the Comelec regional office for the autonomous region is located.

Unas said among those who have signified their interest to be part of Ampatuan’s entourage when he files his certificate of candidacy are leaders of the Moro National Liberation Front, whose communities have benefited from the ARMM’s Social Fund Project (ASFP), which is jointly bankrolled by the World Bank and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation.

In the past two years, World Bank experts have rated as “satisfactory” the implementation of ASFP projects, which are under the joint supervision of Ampatuan and lawyer Mustapha Sambolawan.
