President Arroyo will sign into law the new University of the Philippines (UP) Charter Act during her visit to Cebu on Monday.
Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said the new law would strengthen the capacity of the country’s premier state-run university by giving it fiscal autonomy, among other things.
Congress passed the bill on the new UP Charter last January. Its proponents hope it would bring back the glory of UP as the country’s premier national university.
By becoming fiscally independent, UP officials and employees would be exempted from the Salary Standardization Law.– Marvin Sy
