4 injured in acetylene blast
Investigators said the victims, Roel Cawaling, who is the owner of the Solar Automotive Shop, and his customers, Mohmina Sultan, Monera Singkang, Puwela Monsor, sustained shrapnel wounds in different parts of their bodies and are now undergoing medication at a local hospital.
The victims were having their vehicles fixed when a burning metal fragment from two ends of a muffler pipe being welded with an electric arch welder by a worker landed on a hose of a welding torch attached to an acetylene tank, causing the explosion.
Senior Superintendent Willie Dangane, city police director, said Cawaling has promised to shoulder the expenses for the medication of his injured costumers.
“Mr. Cawaling can be held liable because he owns the auto shop. It’s good there’s enough goodwill from him. He has promised to spend for the medication of the victims.”
Dangane said so powerful was the blast that people residing around the shop thought it was an improvised explosive device.
Cawaling’s shop is less than 200 meters away from where a powerful bomb exploded while being transported by a courier riding a motorcycle just a few months ago.
The bomber was killed on the spot, pieces of his body scattered in a 200-meter radius from the spot where the bomb went off. – John Unson
