3.6 magnitude tectonic quake hits Tandag

A 3.6 magnitude tectonic earthquake hit Tandag, Surigao del Sur yesterday morning but no damage was reported, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs said the tremor struck at 11:21 a.m. and was traced at 67 kilometers northeast of Tandag.

The quake was felt at Intensity 2 in Butuan City.

A movement along the Philippine Trench caused the temblor, Phivolcs said, adding no aftershocks were recorded.

Tectonic is pertaining to the structure or movement of the earth’s crust.

The country is part of the so-called “Ring of Fire” of volcanic islands along the quake-prone western rim of the  Pacific Ocean .

About 20 quakes hit the Philippines everyday but only a few are felt, Phivolcs said.       – Helen Flores
