Rizal gov threatens to take over landfill

Rizal Gov. Casimiro Ynares 111 threatened yesterday to take over the operations of the sanitary landfill in E. Rodriguez town should the municipal government implements starting tomorrow a new round of increase on tipping and other fees.

Ynares issued the warning after E. Rodriguez Mayor Pedro Cuerpo announced that he was giving Metro Manila mayors until tomorrow to pay an additional tipping fee as required by a newly passed municipal ordinance or he would close the landfill.

All the 16 cities and lone municipality of Metro Manila dump an estimated 8,000 tons of garbage daily at the E. Rodriguez landfill.

Should Cuerpo make good his threat, Ynares said the provincial government would be forced to take over the operations of the landfill as it did several years ago when the town mayor closed it.

Two months ago, the E. Rodriguez municipal council passed Ordinance No. 07-18 increasing the tipping fee at the landfill by P200.

When Metro Manila mayors made an appeal, the municipal government even increased the tipping fee by another P200.

A truck dumping garbage at the landfill used to pay a P439 tipping fee, which included the P299 entrance fee, P40 the road-right-of-way, P30 for the wash bay, and P70 for the LGU fund.

Last Aug. 16, the provincial board declared the tipping fee increases null and void. – Non Alquitran
