Lawyer: Estrada has no plans to regain power if cleared on graft charges

-

MANILA (AP) - A lawyer for ousted President Joseph Estrada said Wednesday the former action movie star wouldn't seek to regain power if he's cleared of corruption charges.

Estrada's six-year trial closed June 15, leaving the court 90 days to announce a verdict.

Former Sen. Rene Saguisag, a member of Estrada's legal team, told reporters that Estrada was not interested in regaining power if acquitted and has promised "not to do anything incompatible with the national interest."

Saguisag said he has "high confidence" that Estrada's son and co-defendant Sen. Jinggoy Estrada, along with former aide Eduardo Serapio, would be acquitted of plunder. But he admitted he was less confident about Estrada's acquittal on plunder charges.
