DAVAO CITY A landslide killed five people and injured five others in a rain-soaked village in a mining site in Compostela Valley Tuesday, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said.
Heavy rains triggered the slip that buried six houses in Barangay Napnapan in Pantukan town. The five survivors were brought to the Davao Regional Medical Center in Tagum, Davao del Norte, it added.
Carmelito Lupo, the OCDs Southern Mindanao director, said the mining site is one of the landslide-prone areas in the region.
The Pantukan mining site is situated adjacent to the gold-rush area on Mt. Diwalwal in Monkayo town.
Lupo said emergency reaction teams are on standby in both sites since the heavy rains in the past days could trigger more landslides. Edith Regalado, AFP
