In a press conference, Dela Cruz revealed that the DENR, in its order dated May 26, allowed the Rosemoor Mining and Development Corp. (RMDC) to carry on with its operation.
"But even when the permit was terminated in March, blasting continued in Biak-na-Bato, which endangers the lives of the people there. In fact, the operation already affected the vegetation and water tables in the area," Dela Cruz noted.
According to the order signed by regional director Angel Bravo, of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau-Region III, the OTP for RMDC "shall be valid until all the marble blocks and slabs are transported to their destinations." The OTP usually has duration of only up to 30 days, and thus, could be renewed every month.
De la Cruz urged President Arroyo to declare the entire Biak na Bato as a National Park so that it can be spared from such damaging industrial activities.
