Sayyaf man in Palawan kidnap falls

ZAMBOANGA CITY — Military intelligence agents captured in Basilan last Tuesday a suspected Abu Sayyaf member involved in the 2001 kidnapping of three Americans and 17 Filipinos in a resort in Palawan.

The suspect, Abshar Ismael, alias Abu Arsad, who was arrested in Barangay Carbon, Isabela City, was involved in other Abu Sayyaf abductions such as those of teachers, students and Fr. Rhoel Gallardo in Tumahubong, Sumisip, Basilan in March 2000, said Brig. Gen. Reymundo Ferrer, commander of the Army’s 103rd Infantry Brigade.

According to an intelligence official, Ismael is one of the followers of Abu Sayyaf leader Isnilon Hapilon.
