Security for Zambo City ‘people’s assembly’ tight

ZAMBOANGA CITY — Authorities are beefing up security here as thousands of city residents gather for a "people’s assembly" today coinciding with a congressional inquiry to air their sentiments against President Arroyo’s order to transfer the Armed Forces Southern Command headquarters to Pulacan, Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur.

Banks, shopping malls and other major business establishments are expected to shut down today in sympathy for the protest against the transfer plan.

The House defense committee led by Parañaque City Rep. Roilo Golez is holding its second hearing on the issue at the gymnasium of the Western Mindanao State University.

Golez and other committee members will also inspect the Southcom headquarters and the facilities of its support units — the Naval Forces Western Mindanao and the 3rd Tactical Operation Wing.

Senior Superintendent Henry Losañez, city police chief, said they have tightened security to prevent any untoward incidents.

Col. Jovencio Magalso, chief of Task Force Zamboanga, said soldiers will augment city policemen in securing those taking part in the people’s assembly.

City Mayor Celso Lobregat earlier said that based on his consultations, the people of Zamboanga are opposed to the transfer of Southcom which Mrs. Arroyo bared during her visit to Pagadian City last March.

The other day, Lt. Gen. Edilberto Adan, Armed Forces deputy chief of staff, said Armed Forces chief Gen. Efren Abu has ordered an in-depth study on the implications and resource requirements of the planned transfer of Southcom.
