P’sinan exec wants police camp named after GMA’s mom

- Eva Visperas -
LINGAYEN, Pangasinan — If provincial board member Danilo Dizon has his way, he wants the camp of the provincial police here named after President Arroyo’s mother, former First Lady Eva Macaraeg-Macapagal.

Last Friday, Dizon, who represents the first district, sponsored a proposed ordinance naming the police camp as Camp Eva Macaraeg-Macapagal. It was subsequently passed on first reading.

Dizon said one of the thrusts of President Arroyo is to streamline the Philippine National Police and turn it into a world-class police force in all aspects.

He said one of the strategies to carry this out is naming military and police camps after individuals who are no longer living but whose character traits were exemplary.

When she visited the police camp in November 2003, Mrs. Arroyo observed that it had no name and expressed her wish that it be named after her mother who grew up in Binalonan town.

The Local Government Code of 1991 authorizes the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, in consultation with the Philippine Historical Commission, to change the name of any public place or building owned by the provincial government.
