DAVAO CITY For attempting to pacify two warring groups, a son of a prominent trader was shot dead here before dawn Sunday, and the suspect is a grandson of Maguindanao Gov. Andal Ampatuan.
Police filed charges yesterday against Mohamad Ampatuan Banarin, whose father is a municipal mayor in Maguindanao, for the death of Carlo Asistido.
Sources said Banarin, a sophomore of the University of Mindanao here, was escorted by an Army soldier who allegedly provided him with the pistol with which he shot Asistido.
Banarin reportedly had a spat with the group of Jun-Jun Paglas, son of former Datu Paglas mayor Ibrahim Paglas, at the Venue entertainment compound here.
Asistido was said to have tried to pacify the two groups but was instead shot.
Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said he will not interfere in the case since charges have already been filed in court.
"But what I would like to emphasize to these people is that if they want to kill each other, they can do it somewhere else and not here in Davao City," he said.
