Defeated bet does a Rambo

COTABATO CITY — Residents of a North Cotabato village ran for their lives yesterday when a defeated candidate for kagawad (councilman) went berserk, indiscriminately firing an M-60 machinegun.

The suspect, Kabuat Mentang, escaped after sending his neighbors in Barangay Central Labas, Midsayap town scampering for safety. He is now being hunted down.

Mentang, authorities claimed, has links with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and is known to have a stockpile of firearms.

No one was reported hurt in the indiscriminate firing. — John Unson
