Tailings clean-up delay hit

-
BOAC, Marinduque — Residents of two barangays severely affected by mine tailings from the Marcopper mining spill in 1996 have expressed their disgust over the long-delayed clean-up of mine tailings in their area.

In a March 24 rally commemorating the sixth anniversary of the incident, 1,000 placard-bearing residents of Barangays Hinapulan and Binunga decried recent moves to delay anew the removal of the tailings now being carried out by the local folk themselves.

They bewailed the idea of soliciting the help of the US Geological Services to undertake further studies on the environmental impact of the tailings on the island.
