Mayon roars anew

After a few days of lull and relative quiet, Mayon Volcano roared and spewed lava fragments anew yesterday, prompting government volcanologists to warn of possible sudden explosions.

"Mayon’s activity was marked by the resumption of almost continuous jetting and roaring sounds that were also reflected as background tremor," the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said in its latest bulletin.

Phivolcs said the roaring sounds were heard intermittently at the Lignon Hill station, some 12 kilometers away from the volcano, and were heard continuously at a vantage point eight kilometers southeast of the volcano’s summit.

Mayon also spewed incandescent lava fragments 100 meters into the air, Phivolcs said. Felix de los Santos
