Maceda’s son eyed for Comelec

The son of former Ambassador Ernesto Maceda is being eyed as a possible commissioner of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

This was revealed yesterday by outgoing Comelec Chairman Harriet Demetriou to clarify reports that Maceda himself is being considered to take her post.

"In fairness to him (Ambassador Maceda), hindi siya interesado (he is not interested," Demetriou said. "But his son, Erwin, is one of those being eyed (as commisisoner)."

Demetriou said that Erwin Maceda is currently the chief of staff of House Speaker Arnulfo Fuentebella.

Demetriou is set to retire this Feb. 2 together with Commissioners Teresita Dy Liacco Flores and Julio Desamito. The three were supposed to retire next year but the Supreme Court ruled that their terms would have to expire this year.

The Comelec is presently preparing for the May 2001 elections. Sandy Araneta
