PNP finalizes security for President Marcos’ SONA

MANILA, Philippines — Security preparations are in the final phase for President Marcos’ fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 27.

Philippine National Police chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. yesterday directed PNP personnel to finalize inspections of deployment blueprints and emergency contingencies around the Batasang Pambansa complex in Quezon City.

“All concerned units are in the final phase of coordination, rehearsals and deployment to ensure a safe, orderly and peaceful event for everyone,” Nartatez said.

In anticipation of protests, Nartatez reminded police to adhere strictly to human rights protocols and operational guidelines.

Around 20,229 police personnel will be deployed to secure the SONA, National Capital Region Police Office spokesperson Maj. Hazel Asilo said.

The NCRPO will hold a final coordination meeting with groups planning to stage rallies to determine their designated assembly areas.

Discussions with the Quezon City Police District showed that a group’s preferred venue involved occupying a public road, which the local government did not approve due to its potential impact on motorists and commuters, Asilo said.

Four groups have so far applied for rally permits, although none had been approved as of yesterday, she noted.

Police are considering a possible gun and liquor ban during the SONA, subject to assessment and consultations with local government units, Asilo said. — Mark Ernest Villeza
