ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Two Philippine Coast Guard bomb experts were injured after an explosive they were preparing for a training activity went off inside the PCG-Southwestern Mindanao barracks here on Saturday.

In a statement, the PCG assured the public that the incident was not related to any terrorist activity in the city.

“It has been classified as an accidental detonation during the handling and preparation of explosive materials within the PCG premises,” the PCG said.

The injured personnel, whose identities were withheld, were conscious when rushed to Ciudad Medical Hospital for treatment.

Initial investigation showed that the two bomb experts were preparing explosive lecture materials for an upcoming training when the accidental detonation occurred.

The PCG stressed that it remains committed to ensuring the safety and welfare of its personnel and advised the public to remain calm as the incident is being investigated.
