Ormoc City boosts sports program

MANILA, Philippines — Ormoc City took another significant step in strengthening its reputation as a rising sports capital with the formal inauguration of its new Boxing Gym and Boxing Ring at the Ormoc City Sports Complex on Aug. 3.

The opening ceremony was led by Leyte 4th District Rep. Richard Gomez, together with Ormoc City Mayor Lucy Torres-Gomez, Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines president Marcus Manalo and Philippine Sports Commission chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio.

The modern facility is part of the city’s continuing investment in grassroots sports development, providing aspiring boxers with a world-class venue to train.

Gomez said the project reflects the city’s commitment to nurturing young athletes by giving them the tools and environment they need to succeed.

“Champions aren’t made by punching bags. We built this gym so our athletes can focus on throwing winning punches, not finding a place to train. The next boxing superstar could very well come from Ormoc,” Gomez said.

Torres-Gomez affirmed the city’s commitment to expanding opportunities for Ormocan athletes through sustained investments in sports infrastructure and development programs.
