Obiena bags gold in Germany
MANILA, Philippines — Olympic pole vaulter EJ Obiena is back on top.
Obiena ruled the Halberstädter Höhenflug - 1. Internationales Stabhochsprung-Meeting auf dem Domplatz in Germany after clearing 5.76 meters Saturday (Manila time.)
This is his sixth gold medal this year and second consecutive podium finish after bringing home a silver medal back in Spain two weeks ago.
Obiena, ranked 14th in the world, cleared 5.56 meters with ease in his first jump of the day.
But after skipping 5.66 meters, it was only down to between him and Abdelsalam Seifeldin, who cleared 5.66 meters after three attempts.
Obiena then flew over 5.76 meters in his first try, but the Qatari Seifeldin could not clear the distance, giving the victory to the Filipino.
The Filipino tried to go for a season-best 5.90 meters, but he missed all three attempts.
Completing the podium was American Cole Walsh, who cleared 5.56 meters.
Obiena has seen an upward trajectory of his season thus far.
Two weeks ago, he cleared a season-best 5.85 meters in Madrid, Spain, to finish with the silver medal. A couple of days before that, he reached 5.80 meters in Hungary but finished sixth in the tournament.
