MANILA, Philippines — The Metro Manila Subway Project is around 60 percent complete, Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez said over the weekend.

“By 2028 – before the President’s term ends – we can expect to see a demonstration run, at least for the section from Valenzuela to Quirino station,” Lopez said.

The tunnel for the subway project, specifically from Valenzuela to Quirino Avenue station and from North Avenue to Tandang Sora is finished, according to Lopez.

This follows President Marcos’ directive to accelerate subway construction so that passengers can soon experience safe and comfortable travel.

“This demonstrates the administration’s commitment to fast-tracking such major projects,” Lopez said.

He said the subway would save Filipinos “significant time and money.”

Once the project is completed, Lopez said the subway would serve 519,000 passengers daily.

The travel time from Valenzuela City to Ninoy Aquino International Airport will be reduced from one-and-a-half hours to just 41 minutes.
