Quezon City government strengthens Unesco commitments

MANILA, Philippines — Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte has created a multisectoral body that will coordinate the city’s efforts to fulfill its commitments with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Belmonte recently issued an executive order to establish the Quezon City Learning, Information and Culture Committee.

The body will be primarily in charge of coordinating the city’s initiatives as a UNESCO Creative City of Film, a UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Pilot City and a member of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities.

“These recognitions are more than international distinctions. They represent our commitment to empowering every QCitizen through education, culture and access to reliable information,” Belmonte said in a statement.

“By bringing together our departments and partners under one coordinating body, we can better deliver programs that help our communities become more informed, engaged and resilient,” she added.

Belmonte will chair the committee, with the Education Affairs Unit serving as secretariat.

Its members include representatives from key city departments, Schools Division Office, Quezon City University, Quezon City Public Library and other partner institutions.

In addition to developing and implementing action plans that advance the city’s commitments to UNESCO, the body is also tasked to strengthen partnerships, monitor program implementation and lead public awareness campaigns on education, media and information literacy, lifelong learning and culture.
