MANILA, Philippines — The Liga Baseball Philippines will kick off its second season in spectacular fashion with prominent celebrities expected to grace its star-studded opening ceremony at the Felino Marcelino Baseball Stadium in Taguig City on June 12.

“It will be a grand night of celebrities in sports, showbiz, business and public service, who are enthusiastic in supporting the real stars of the tournament, the baseball players themselves," LBP chairman Wopsy Zamora said in Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum at the Philippine Sports Commission media room.

“So it's all roads to Taguig's Marcelino Diamond to witness the grand night opening and the night games ahead,” he added during the forum presented by San Miguel Corporation, PSC, Philippine Olympic Committee, MILO, and the country’s 24/7 sports app ArenaPlus.

After last year's maiden edition, this one promises to be a different kind of spectacle from the opening rites and first pitch all the way to the championship where top club, collegiate and commercial teams vie for the prestigious title in the league patterned after the legendary Manila Bay Baseball League ( MBBL) of the 1960’s.

Billed as 2026 LMP “Celebrity Cup”, the league will formally open for the first time with night games and under the bright lights of the modern Taguig venue in lieu of the historic Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium in Manila.

The LBP Season 2 was organized by its set of officers led by Zamora, president Jose Pepe Muñoz, director general Ping Remollo, commissioner Mike Zialcita and directors Ricky Palou, Anthony Suntay, Raymond Tolentino, Nats Faustino and Rebo Saguisag, among others.

Reigning three-peat UAAP champion National University will go for another milestone in LBP along with arch rival DLSU Green Batters.

The Katayama Baseball Academy (KBA) of Philippines-based team owner Keiji Katayama will also be in the fold along with the Muralla Dawgs, Taguig IX, Ateneo, UST and Philippine Air Force. (PSA pool story)
