Erap honors Maceda, 10 Outstanding Manileños today

MANILA, Philippines – Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada will posthumously confer on former Senate president Ernesto Maceda the Gawad Gat Andres Bonifacio award today.

Estrada will present the award to Maceda’s family during awarding ceremonies at the Manila Hotel at 6 p.m. along with the 10 Outstanding Manilenos as part of the celebration of the 445th Araw ng Maynila tomorrow.

“He passed away three days short to personally receive the award. It would have been a great honor to give the city’s highest award to one of its greatest sons,” Estrada said.

Maceda started his 43-year government service as a councilor of Manila at the age of 23 in 1959. He was named outstanding councilor of Manila because of his numerous achievements in the city council.

Estrada considers Maceda as his mentor.

Maceda, also known as “Mr. Exposé,” for his speeches exposing government anomalies, held five Cabinet positions aside from being Senate president from 1996 to 1998.

This year’s outstanding Manileños are former Manila mayor Antonio Villegas (posthumous); Emiliano Lopez Jr. for public service; Angel Ngu of the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Community for community service; George Samson, chairman of the World Medical Relief; Miss Earth 2015 Angelia Ong for environment; 2015 Miss International Queen Trixie Maristela; Dr. Paolo Campos (posthumous), founder of Medical Center Manila; architect Joel Vivero Rico, former president of the Philippine Institute of Architecture; GMA-7 broadcaster Mike Enriquez, and Filomena Codiñera Jr., former coach of the Philippine national softball and baseball team.
