Pasig cops insist: Road rage caused shooting

MANILA, Philippines – The Pasig City police is convinced that the fatal shooting of a delivery van driver along Ortigas Avenue on Thursday was triggered by road rage, an official said yesterday.

Chief Inspector Roberto Garcia, city police investigation chief, said while they are considering all angles in the probe, there are no indications yet to show there is a personal motive for the shooting of driver Richard Tuazon.

“There seems to be none. But we will still investigate,” he said in a text message.

Following the shooting, the Eastern Police District formed a special probe team headed by EPD deputy district director for operations Senior Superintendent Edwin de Ocampo.

Garcia’s statement, however, is contrary to a statement released by the EPD on Friday.

“The incident was definitely not a (case of) road rage,” the statement read.

The EPD said witnesses saw that on Rosario Bridge, an unidentified man stepped out of a black Toyota Innova (APA 9824), approached the right side of the Mitsubishi L300 van driven by Tuazon, an employee of World Class Laminated Inc., and shot him repeatedly. Both vehicles were in motion at the time.

The Pasig police has yet to release the name of the owner of the Innova.

EPD director Chief Superintendent Elmer Jamias declined to say if the shooting was really triggered by road rage.

“We are still in the process of followup. Please wait for our update,” Jamias said in a text message.
