CIDG nabs Korean embezzler, Italian swindling suspect

MANILA, Philippines - A Korean man convicted of embezzling and an Italian charged with swindling were arrested by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in separate operations in Quezon City and Baguio City, an official said yesterday.

Hong Sun Hun fled Korea and went to Hong Kong and then the Philippines in August 2011, CIDG director Chief Superintendent Victor Deona said.

Detectives of the Anti-Transnational Crime Unit caught Hong on Matimpiin street in Quezon City, he added.

The Busan district court issued a warrant for his arrest after sentencing him to a year’s imprisonment for embezzling 80 won a woman had given to him as deposit for a property she wanted to rent in 2010. Hong had introduced the victim to the owner of the property.

Hong, a subject of an Interpol red notice, was turned over to the Bureau of Immigration on Nov. 26.

Meanwhile, Italian Massimo Proietti, 51, was apprehended in Woods Gate Subdivision, Baguio City on Nov. 26.

Senior Superintendent Jimmy Catanes said Proietti was arrested on the strength of an arrest warrant issued by Judge Glenda-Ortiz Soriano on charges of swindling.

He said Proietti is being held by the CIDG-Baguio office prior to turning him over to the court.
