MANILA, Philippines – With Christmas approaching, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will allot funds for barangays to prevent street children from singing carols to passing motorists and asking for gifts.
DSWD Secretary Corazon Soliman said yesterday they will provide barangays where street children congregate to host activities for the children such as making belens and Christmas lanterns, singing carols in barangay halls and parties for nine days before Christmas.
“We’ll give them P100,000 to spend (on these activities for children),” Soliman told The Star.
Soliman said they will coordinate this effort with barangay councils for the protection of children.
Caroling on the streets endangers the lives of children, she said.
