MMDA to offer free ferry rides on Friday

MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will offer free rides on its Pasig River ferry service to mark its 40th founding anniversary on Nov. 6.

MMDA Chairman Emerson Carlos said the free rides would cover all 11 ferry stations from Pinagbuhatan in Pasig to Escolta in Manila, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“It’s our way of giving back to the public for supporting the ferry service,” Carlos said.

He said this would attract more commuters to patronize the ferry service along the Pasig River to avoid heavy traffic on EDSA and other major roads in Metro Manila.

“The ferry service is a convenient and fast alternative mode of transportation for those going to Manila from the eastern part of the metropolis,” Carlos said.

Among the highlights of the five-day anniversary celebration, with the theme “Life Beyond 40,” is the launching of two new ferry boats today, bringing to 11 the total units plying the Pasig River.

The MMDA will also offer a free all-day viewing of Metro Manila Film Fest entries at the agency’s theater in Orense, Makati tomorrow.

The celebration will culminate on Nov. 7 at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila, with Metro Manila mayors and former MMDA heads, including Imelda Marcos, expected to grace the event.
