Bus crushes girl on EDSA
MANILA, Philippines - A 14-year-old girl was run over by a speeding bus at the intersection of EDSA and East Avenue in Quezon City yesterday afternoon.
Abby Cunanan and her friend, Rainier Castro, were crossing the road when a Safeway bus (TXP-845) hit her just before 3 p.m. Castro managed to avoid the bus.
The bus dragged Cunanan several meters and her head was crushed under the vehicle’s left front tire.
“We just alighted from the Metro Rail Transit and were trying to cross towards East Avenue to go to the Quezon Memorial Circle, where we were supposed to hold a dance practice. It just happened so fast,” Castro told police.
However, he admitted that they did not notice that the traffic light was about to change and Cunanan hesitated in the middle of the road.
Bus driver Lory Gallerda said he did not notice the children crossing and only realized that there was an accident when he heard a thud.
Traffic enforcers arrested Gallerda, who will be charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.
