FDA warns of 3 unregistered insecticides

Sheila Crisostomo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Three unregistered household insecticides from China are being sold in local markets, particularly in Divisoria, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned the public yesterday.

The safety of Big Bie Aerosol Insecticide, Tianshi Insect Killer and Baolilai Aerosol Insecticide cannot be guaranteed since they were “not evaluated for compliance to FDA regulations to ensure the efficacy and safety to human,” FDA director general Nicolas Lutero III said.

The active ingredient in these products is cypermethrin, a broad-spectrum insecticide that kills pests, beneficial insects and susceptible animals, particularly aquatic organisms.

Among the effects on animals and humans are reduced fertility and cancer as a result of DNA damage.

Lutero ordered FDA field officers to seize the products.
