Man cuffs self to MRT billboard

Robertzon Ramirez - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A 20-year-old man handcuffed himself to a billboard at the Metro Rail Transit’s Kamuning station yesterday afternoon after his family shunned him for being in a “forbidden” relationship.

Firefighters had to cut the handcuffs to rescue Joshua Ortega two hours after he attached himself to the billboard at around 2 p.m., according to Chief Inspector Aristotle Bañaga.

Ortega, covering his face with his hands, told police he felt guilty about having an affair with his brother’s wife. He left La Union and moved to Manila, where he tried to commit suicide in January 2014.

He said he wanted to jump from the billboard because he could not help loving his brother’s wife.

The Quezon City Police District’s Station 10 said Ortega will be charged with alarm and scandal.
