500 families lose homes in Manila fire
MANILA, Philippines - More than 500 families are likely to celebrate Christmas in evacuation centers after losing their shanties to a fire in Sta. Cruz, Manila yesterday.
The fire broke out along Doroteo Jose and Oroquieta streets at around 5 a.m. and reached Task Force Charlie before it was put out at around 7:30 a.m.
No one died but two volunteer firefighters, Jeffrey Jerus of Escolta and Rico Ayusa, were injured.
The cause of fire has yet to be established but arson investigators said several liquefied petroleum gas tank explosions were heard while firefighters were hosing down the area.
